Supporting Buddhist spiritual carers or chaplains across Queensland and connecting people with the care they need
Welcome to Buddhist Spiritual Care Queensland
Buddhist Spiritual Care Queensland Inc. is a Brisbane based not-for-profit association bringing together volunteer and professional Buddhist spiritual carers or chaplains across Queensland. We warmly welcome carers, chaplains, community members and anyone offering or seeking compassionate spiritual support. Our mission is to strengthen spiritual care in a range of settings by coordinating volunteer services and providing a clear, accessible point of connection for people looking for care.
BSCQ Inc. also serves as a supportive network for carers, creating opportunities for peer engagement, shared learning and collaboration across their respective fields. Whether you are seeking spiritual care, hoping to connect with a carer, or interested in joining and contributing to our community, we invite you to learn more about our work and get in touch.
What We Do
Our members provide spiritual care in hospitals, mental health services, prisons, aged care and palliative care settings, as well as in other community organisations and institutions. Some members work professionally on a full-time or part-time basis, while others provide support on call, as needed.
Spiritual care is tailored to each person’s circumstances, with a focus on emotional and spiritual needs, particularly during periods of transition. Major life changes can bring anxiety and uncertainty. A spiritual carer or chaplain can help people explore or be at peace with deeper concerns, including end-of-life transition or a loss of meaning or agency, and support them as they navigate change.
Many of our carers are Buddhist practitioners from a variety of traditions. Although their approach to spiritual care is secular, it is informed by each member’s own practice. People of all faiths and none are of course welcome to seek support from a Buddhist spiritual carer or chaplain.
A community of practice
Bringing Buddhist Spiritual Carers together to share experience, learn and support each other. Our community will grow through connection, reflection and practical collaboration.
A register of carers
We are building a listing of Buddhist carers across Queensland. If you are a Buddhist carer, we would love to hear from you and learn about your work.
Connecting with the community
In time, we aim to connect people seeking Buddhist spiritual care directly with the carers who can offer compassionate listening and support.
Common Questions About Buddhist Spiritual Care
Find practical information for people seeking Buddhist spiritual care, chaplains, carers and community supporters. Where details are still being confirmed, please use the Contact section to ask BSCQ directly.
Qualifications vary among individual carers and chaplains. At a minimum, members must complete a Buddhist chaplaincy training course delivered by the Queensland Sangha Association, which provides a foundational understanding of spiritual care and chaplaincy. Some members also hold formal qualifications or professional accreditations. Please refer to each member’s individual profile for details of their qualifications. All members identify as Buddhist and maintain an ongoing Buddhist practice.
Anyone can request support from a Buddhist spiritual carer or chaplain. Requests may come from an institution on behalf of a client, or directly from individuals or their family members. You can review our members’ profiles to find a carer whose qualifications, location or Buddhist tradition best suits your needs. As many carers are volunteers with family and work commitments, they may not be able to respond to every request immediately. Alternatively, you can complete a request form with the relevant details, which can then be distributed to suitable spiritual carers or chaplains.
Most of our members serve as volunteer spiritual carers or chaplains, so there is generally no charge for the support they provide. Spiritual carers or chaplains employed by institutions on a full-time or part-time basis are however paid by those institutions in accordance with their role and hours of work.
A voluntary donation to help cover expenses, such as travel costs, is always appreciated and may be made directly to the individual carer.
